  4. Halley's Comet, which has appeared in 1759, 1835, and 1910, is scheduled to reappear in 1986 and has already been sighted with telescopes.

  5. Jakob Moleschott (1822–1893) and Ludwig Büchner (1824–1899) were philosophers of materialism.

  6. A short time later, the Theosophical Society in Adyar proclaimed the rebirth of Christ in the Indian boy, Krishnamurti. This was protested by Rudolf Steiner, and his dissent led to the exclusion of the German Section of the Society, of which Steiner was the General Secretary.

  7. Rudolf Steiner did not use the term “Rosicrucian” in direct connection with the Theosophical Society. It refers rather to a path of spiritual investigation appropriate for modern humanity and is not to be confused with today's self-proclaimed Rosicrucians.

  8. Following this hint of a Fifth Gospel, Rudolf Steiner did not elaborate on it until 1913. He gave a lecture cycle in Oslo, Norway in October 1913 and in Cologne in December 1913. Some of these lectures were published in English in the volume, The Fifth Gospel, London, Rudolf Steiner Press, reprinted 1978.
